“Diversifying partnerships in sustainability and ecological restoration: collaborations with the incarcerated”
The ESA Diversity Luncheon celebrates the diversity of our members, of our programs and of research that reaches multiple communities in myriad settings. Join us for a special panel presentation moderated by Nalini Nadkarni, ESA VP for Education and Human Resources, and celebrate the accomplishments of our SEEDS Undergraduate Research Fellows.
The ESA seeks to increase and sustain diversity and equity in many ways, with a strong focus to engage people who have not traditionally participated in ecology. As one example, ecologists have partnered with correctional institutions to provide opportunities for the incarcerated to participate in sustainability and ecological restoration projects across the country. Nationally, ethnic minorities, people of low socioeconomic status, and low levels of education disproportionately represent the 2.1 million people in corrections institutions. Three ecologists who have work with inmates in sustainability and ecological restoration projects will describe the challenges and benefits of their collaborative efforts with a range of corrections institutions, geographical scales, and biota.
Presenters:
- Tom Kaye, Institute for Applied Ecology, Corvallis, OR
- Deborah Rutt, Coffee Creek Corrections Center, Portland, OR
- Chad Naugle, Coffee Creek Corrections Center, Portland
- Nalini Nadkarni, Initiative to bring Science Programs to the Incarcerated, UT
