2017 Annual Meeting Photo Contest
The ecological community gathers each year for the ESA Annual Meeting. The heart of our society is its members and the free exchange of scientific ideas. Snap a picture during the Portland Meeting of our ecological community in action, enter the photo contest, and see your photograph featured on the ESA website and in other materials.
***Please Note: Photos taken for the ESA’s “Exchanging Ecological Ideas” photo contest must be taken at an official ESA event during the 2017 Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon.***
About the Contest
The theme of the contest is “Exchanging Ecological Ideas.” You may submit up to three photos. The deadline for submissions is August 31, so you have plenty of time after the meeting to pick your entries.
Prizes
Prizes will be awarded to one First Place Winner, one Second Place Winner, and one Third Place Winner.
- The First Place Winner will have his/her winning photo featured on the ESA website, and will receive $100.
- The Second Place Winner will have his/her winning photos featured on the ESA website and receive $75.
- The Third Place Winner will have his/her winning photos featured on the ESA website and receive $50 each.

- Email your photo files to PAO@ESA.org. Each individual is limited to entering three photographs.
The photo contest deadline for submissions is August 31 at 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time. By submitting an entry, each contestant agrees to the rules of the contest and warrants that his or her entry complies with all requirements set out in the Official Rules, which can be found below.

Sponsor
The Sponsor is Ecological Society of America (ESA),1990 M Street NW, Suite 700, Washington, DC.
Term
Photos taken for the ESA’s “Exchanging Ecological Ideas” photo contest MUST BE TAKEN at an official ESA event during the 2017 Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon. The photo contest deadline for submissions is August 31 at 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time By submitting an entry, each contestant agrees to the rules of the contest and warrants that his or her entry complies with all requirements set out in the Official Rules.
Eligibility
The contest is open to any person who is officially registered and attends ESA’s Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon who is at least 18 years of age. The contest is free to enter. Employees, interns, officers, and board members of the Ecological Society of America are not eligible. Each person entering may enter up to three photographs.
What to Enter
The theme of the contest is “Exchanging Ecological Ideas.” Photographs entered into the contest must depict a person, a group of people engaging in conversation, people participating in a field trip or social event, workshop, plenary, special session, chapter, section or workshop picture. Photos may be taken inside or outside for a field trip, chapter or section meeting, plenary or the special policy forum.
Feel free to enter:
- Photos taken in any Annual Meeting public space
- Photos taken at a plenary, special forum, or workshop
- Photos taken on an Annual Meeting field trip
- Color or black and white photos
- Photos taken at any time of day
Do not enter photos taken:
- In any session where photography is prohibited (see the official ESA program photo guidelines) or shows someone’s research such as in a poster session
- You didn’t take, or for which someone else owns the copyright
- Only show someone else’s copyrighted work
- Show nudity, violence, or symbols or acts of hatred
- Are illegal or prohibited
- Of any person under the 18-years of age
How To Enter: Two-step submission
To enter:
- Complete this online form AND
- Email your photo files to PAO@ESA.org. Each individual is limited to entering three photographs.
Photographs must be in digital format; we do not accept photographs submitted through the mail. Photographs must be submitted in .jpeg or .jpg format. Photos may not exceed 10 MB.
Minor adjustments, such as cropping, correcting color saturation, or panoramic stitching, are acceptable. Photos whose content has been significantly altered are ineligible.
The photograph must be the original work of the contest entrant and must not contain material that violates or infringes another’s rights to privacy, trademarks, or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement.
Sponsor reserves the right to examine the original photograph/source material in order to confirm compliance with these rules.
Releases
All those entering the contest grant The Ecological Society of America an irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, fully-paid up license to reproduce, copy, display, perform, or otherwise use any photos submitted in this photo contest for print and digital promotional use (such as brochures, association publications, any, web-based media – blogs, websites, e-newsletters). You hereby release and hold harmless The Ecological Society of America and their agents from all claims, demands, causes of action and liability related to said use of the material. ESA will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses.
Entry Deadline
All entries must be received through PAO@ESA.org and a the online form must be completed by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on August 31, 2017.
Contest Prizes
The First Place Winner will have his/her winning photo featured on the ESA website, and will receive $100. The Second Place Winner will have his/her winning photos featured on the ESA website and receive $75. The Third Place Winner will have his/her winning photos featured on the ESA website and receive $50 each. Other photo entries may be used in ESA print or digital publications.
Judging
Judging will be conducted by qualified judges chosen by the Sponsor. Judges will select one First Place Winner, one Second Place Winner, and one Third Place Winner. Judges will make their selection based on the following judging criteria: extent to which the photograph captures the essence of the contest theme (50%); creativity (25%); and composition, clarity, and technical quality (25%). Winners will be notified by October 1, 2017. Decisions of the judges are final.
License
By entering the contest, entrants grant the Ecological Society of America a non- exclusive, transferable, royalty-free, perpetual, worldwide license to display, distribute, reproduce, and create derivative works of the entries, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or subsequently developed, for any educational, promotional, publicity, exhibition, archival, scholarly, advocacy, or non-commercial purpose, without compensation, permission or further notification to the entrant. Examples of uses include, but are not limited to publication in an ESA journal; promotion of the photo contest and annual meeting; publication on any website of the Ecological Society of America, and in promotional or advocacy documents, pamphlets, or reports. Any photograph reproduced will include a photographer credit as feasible. The Sponsor will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses.
Conditions
This contest is void outside the fifty United States and the District of Columbia, and where prohibited.
The Ecological Society of America reserves the right to cancel the contest or modify these rules at its discretion.
