ESA Journals
Since its earliest days, the Ecological Society has actively published a Bulletin reporting its activities and scholarly journals for its members and other ecologists. In his 1976 history of the Society, Bob Burgess summarized ESA’s publication efforts to that date. At that time, only the Bulletin, Ecology, and Ecological Monographs were included; these three are still published today.
The Society currently publishes the following journals
- Bulletin: Founded in 1917, this quarterly is ESA’s oldest journal. It publishes announcements of meetings, programs, awards, articles, and items of current interest to members. | History and List of Editors
- Ecology: Published since 1920, this monthly publication reports on basic elements of ecological research, including research and synthesis papers on all aspects of ecology. | History and List of Editors
- Ecological Applications: This journal began in 1991 in order to highlight applications of ecological science to environmental problems. Eight times a year, it publishes papers that develop scientific principles to support environmental decision-making. | History and List of Editors
- Ecological Monographs: Initiated in 1931 to accommodate longer articles, Ecological Monographs ranked 9th out of 195 journals in impact factor for the “Ecology” category in 2023. | History and List of Editors
- Ecosphere: Published monthly, this is ESA’s fully open-access alternative, launched in 2010.
- Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment: Issued 10 times per year since 2003, Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment contains peer-reviewed, synthetic review articles, and short, high-impact research communications of broad interdisciplinary appeal and features of interest. In 2023, it ranked 6 out of 195 journals in the “Ecology” category.
- Earth Stewardship: Launched in 2024 in collaboration with our publishing partner, Wiley, this new journal targets the integration and convergence of the natural and social sciences and humanities, and the technical, environmental, cultural, and Indigenous knowledge held by local practitioners.
