May 2023 Blackologist of the Month

Suzanne at St. George's Botanical Garden in St Croix, US Virgin Islands, accessing herbarium collections for historical plant samples.

Dr. Suzanne “Sue” Pierre is our May Blackologist of the Month. The founder of the Critical Ecology Lab, Sue grew up with a strong interest in nature and the environment. But she often felt out of place as a black woman in exclusionary environmentally focused spaces. Her research challenges the status quo in ecological sciences by openly addressing the link between global change and socioeconomic inequality. She uses a strong understanding of biogeochemistry, legacies of injustice, and community engagement to develop research programs that empower marginalized peoples to further understand and adapt to the challenges of climate change. For example, she has recently established a project assessing the effects of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade on soils in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.
