What is REEFS?
Resources for Ecology Education – Fair and Share (REEFS) is an annual interactive workshop held during ESA’s Annual Meeting. Since 2008, it has been organized jointly by ESA’s Office of Education and Diversity and the ESA Education Section. See below for more information. This workshop is FREE with ESA annual meeting registration.Â
Â
Why REEFS?
For 16 years, this popular education workshop has provided faculty of all stages of their career an opportunity to share and learn about favorite and innovative classroom activities from colleagues, and discover ways to engage students using active teaching methods. The fields of ecology and education are constantly changing and we encourage instructors at all levels of experience are encouraged to present teaching ideas at any stage of development and to participate in this session. This session will break into small groups so that participants can discuss teaching approaches, challenges, and strategies.
Focus:
This year we are particularly interested in submissions that highlight topics and approaches that have grown in importance in recent years, such as the Four-Dimensional Ecology Education (4DEE) framework, flexible learning activities that can be adapted for in-person and remote learning, and approaches to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in teaching.
Overall Goals:Â Â
- Learn about what colleagues are doing to engage students using active learning methods.
- Improve classroom activities via the exchange of constructive feedback.
- Foster a network of support in advancing ecology education.
- Promote the recommendations of the 4DEE framework and Vision & Change.
