A sentinel seabird of the Arctic sea ice

Although the Arctic has witnessed a decline in sea ice and a spectacular increase in temperatures for several decades, there is little long-term biological monitoring assessing the impacts of these changes on ecosystems. A recent study published in Ecosphere showed that the Mandt’s guillemot, a diving seabird dependent on sea ice, is an excellent sentinel species for the region and for the Arctic cod, a fish consumed by many predators.
